Did You Know? Nova Scotia Gaels are a people whose language is Gaelic. Gaelic is a group of languages spoken in Nova Scotia, Scotland, Ireland, and the Isle of Man. In the 1700s and 1800s, many people from the Scottish Highlands settled in Nova Scotia. So many Gaels settled here that, at one point, they represented a quarter of Nova Scotia's population. Today, one-third of Nova Scotians are descended from these Gaels. While not all speak the language, Gaelic cultural heritage and identity continue to be vibrant elements of Nova Scotia life.
